ow old is the human race? I know for sure that it has been at least two thousand years that great thinkers have thought about one of the most crucial question in life: What is time? I know many have given answers, and who am I to discuss this subject? Iā€™m just a guy behind a computer typing it out. Iā€™m just a guy. I AM a guy. I AM someone. Iā€™m a human being. You are a human being, you are also entitled to discuss this with me. Tell me please, tell me what you think time is.

Is time flowing like waves in the ocean, or is it granular like sand running in the desert? But the most important question for me is. What is the present? Can it be measured? Is the present just this instant? Is the present the same length that it takes me to say this sentence? Say this sentence. Say this sentence again. Is the present over and now Iā€™m in the future? Thatā€™s a lot of questions for one paragraph.

I know that we have in our mind three different ideas: our memory, our current situation and our expectations for the future. I can also describe that in the present. The present of our past, the present of our present and the present of our future. Everything that happens to us, experiences, sounds, sentences we say, etc., transforms us and we can totally measure this transformation. I can say that yesterday I had a great hiking day that transformed my life. Does it mean that I measure time by our experiences? Is time experience?

A 3 minute song. When you start singing you keep in the memory what you just sang, and try to remember if you sang it correctly but at the same time your mind is trying to grab what is coming next so you can continue singing. And in the middle of all of this tension, we have you. Singing. That would be the present. Would that be the present? A moment of tension where you try to keep the memory of what just happened but keep wondering and trying to discover what comes next. Time is tension.

There are many theories out there but if you ever feel lost about what just happened with you, or it happened in the past; or if you feel anxious about what is going to unfold in your life, remember that in this moment you are safe. Close your eyes, sit down, breathe. Feel the world moving. That is the present moment, this feeling that youā€™re having right now. Maybe we, humans, will never be able to measure time properly, perceive time in a proper way, but if you are conscious of what is happening right in this moment, you will feel a relief. A relief for being able to be alive and absorb the experiences you can have as a human being on the planet earth.
